Being a big sister to twins can often be a hard job with two people trying to steal your toys and copy your every move--but today, being older had a perk. Since the twins are still working on their writing skills, a date day to Painting With A Twist was the perfect choice for this budding artist. She loves to color intricate designs on paper, and even though the paint medium is a little different for her, we had a blast honing in on those skills.
When we arrived at the Carrollwood location in Tampa (find yours here), we were greeted by Sydney, our instructor, and knew it was going to be a great class as she already had her beret ready to go! We both got our aprons on, paint brushes in hand and took a seat in our artist chair. Sydney gave us the background on the piece we'd be creating that was inspired by Monet, offered some pointers, but also said to let our own creativity flow.
Each piece is created in layers, so we started with the background as she showed us different techniques from the stage. My daughter was putting her own interpretation into the mix and even got a few technical points that helped her little hands fill the canvas as big as her. There might have even been a few life lesson moments about working hard and being unique in what you do in there as she asked questions about why hers looked different than mine. To keep it encouraging, I didn't want to say out loud how many years I had on her--hah!
There were three layers to this piece, and while each was drying, we got to enjoy some fun games with the chance to win some prizes. It was so wonderful to have time with my girl, but also meet the other classmates, many of which were return attenders, so that certainly speaks of the fun to be had.
Seeing our two masterpieces together is something I will always cherish as I will remember what it was like to see the glimmer in her eyes as she concentrated so hard on the task. She may have asked me ten times just on the way home when we could go back.
I am already looking forward to taking the hubby to Painting With A Twist for a date night out or even joining some girlfriends for our always needed girls night out. Some other reasons for a visit could be a bachelorette party, baby shower activity, their summer classes for kids or teens or a just because you need two hours to yourself.
I hung my painting in a spot that gets lots of indirect bright light. It shows all the details beautifully this way and I can appreciate every brush stroke that was made.
