Vacationing with littles is nothing but blue skies, or at least one would hope! We recently took the kids with us back to Maui for their second time. Traveling all the way over from Florida equates to about 4500 miles of pulling every trick out of my Mary Poppins bag to keep the exhaustion melt downs to a minimum (mine too). Long airplane or car rides can be testing on your momma patience, but I have a few favorites for making the journey easier for you and them.
There is nothing that can push your momma buttons more than when you have kids pulling the "my feet hurt" or "carry me" card while your hands are already juggling luggage as you are trying to make it to a flight. I am so very happy to report on this trip, not one peep about uncomfortable toesies thanks so Friendly Rooster's Native shoes. Add in this super soft Be-YOU-tiful floral sleeved tee from QT&Co, oh em gee cute Unicorn CozyPhones head phones and beyond adorable mermaid peg bracelet from The Loved Peg that doubles as an imagination toy and you are sure to want to run through your arriving destination airport in celebration.
Technology is your friend, I repeat, technology is your friends for travel. We are super limiting on screen time when at home and this totally worked in our favor as the kids looked at us like we had five heads when we let them keep the tablets as long as they wanted. We love the Amazon Kindle Fire for kids, but also have an iPad, so we rotate things around for variety. These Cozy Phone character headphones are not only cute, but pure genius. Fighting to keep their little ears covered to hear has been eliminated as the speakers are in the snug headband that doesn't budge. They have safe decibel limits and anyone in proximity can't hear a peep.
Pack light, but be prepared. I know those two seem to contradict each other, but I'll explain what I mean. We were in Maui for ten days, but I only packed for half of that. If you pack the right things, you really will only need to do one load of laundry (if you can where you stay). For example, we knew we'd be down at the beach a lot, so I took two suits to make sure we had one ready for the next day if the other was drying. Other than that, we took things that can easily mix and match instead of whole outfits that have to go together pattern wise. I was able to pack all three kids' clothing items and mine in one checked bag with one spare outfit for each in my carry on.
Tip: Making things multi-functional always helps. The kids' Skip Hop backpacks were used for travel, but also out and about activity slash spare clothes carry-alls. They loved them because they had their own pieces of home with them always. Each kiddo got to bring one stuffed animal, pick out their activity books and a few small toys.
